<hi style=afpcap>The Fairchild C-119 Boxcar was the unsung hero for three decades, serving in the Korean War in the transportation role, and in Vietnam performing special operations as an AC-119 gunship. Troop Carrier Command (later Tactical Air Command) was the primary user, although C-119s served in Europe and the Pacific. MC-119s were specially equipped to perform the Medical Evacuation role with a red cross on the fin to indicate this duty. A number of Boxcars were modified with clamshell rear cargo doors with the designation C-119J, including several which served briefly at Hickam AFB, Hawaii performing satellite recovery with the aid of a snatch cable suspended from behind.</hi>
